Where Porcupine Bezoar Comes From, and Why It Stays Scarce

A porcupine bezoar is a concretion that forms naturally inside the animal, built up over time as plant material it has eaten is deposited in layers. The key point is this: not every porcupine forms one, and not every bezoar that forms is of usable condition. That is the real reason behind both the price and the supply — not a sales line.

What a bezoar is

In medical usage, "bezoar" describes a mass that forms in an animal's digestive tract. Porcupine bezoar is one such type. The process has something in common with how a pearl forms — a long, layered response to a substance — which is why a cut face shows concentric layering with uneven layer thickness. That structure is one of the most useful features when checking authenticity.

Habitat and origin

Porcupines are found across tropical forest regions of Southeast Asia, including Peninsular Malaysia, Borneo and neighbouring areas. They live in the forest understory, feeding on roots, bark and fruit — and it is that plant material which ultimately becomes the bezoar.

Which points to something worth stating: bezoar quality is tied to the vegetation where the animal lived. Different regions and different diets produce bezoars that differ in colour and layering. It is not something that can be standardised in a factory.

Why usable bezoar is so rare

Between "a bezoar exists" and "a bezoar we can sell" there are several filters:

  1. Formation itself is uncommon. Not every animal produces one.
  2. It has to be large enough. A very small bezoar yields almost nothing once processed.
  3. Condition has to hold. Fractured, damp or structurally loose material cannot be used.
  4. Age determines grade. Bezoar that formed over a short period lacks density and layering, and can only be classified lower.

After all four, the proportion reaching Premium or shelled aged grade is very small. That is why the higher grades often need to be reserved rather than bought from stock.

How we handle sourcing

Our approach comes down to two things: the source has to be stateable, and the condition has to be visible. Every batch is sorted and graded on arrival, and material that does not meet a grade is not sold as that grade. Nano-extracted output is also submitted for independent particle size testing (ISO 22412:2017, measured 122.73 nm).

We do not buy from sellers who cannot account for their material. That is not a moral posture so much as a practical one — stock with an unclear source cannot be verified either, the customer ends up carrying that risk, and it is our name on the packet.

Why "scaling up" is not an option

A fair question we get: if demand is this strong, why not produce more?

Because it is not a capacity problem. Formation takes time and happens inside a wild animal, and no part of that can be accelerated by spending more. Any claim of abundant stock and unlimited supply deserves one follow-up question: where is it all coming from?
