Porcupine Bezoar Active Compounds: The Published Research

Porcupine dates (porcupine bezoar) contain tannins, β-sitosterol, bromelain, and the amino acids arginine, glutamic acid, glycine, proline and tyrosine. This page collects the representative international papers for each compound. One thing to note before you read on: only the first paper studies porcupine bezoar itself — the other seven study the compounds, not the product.

Before you read this page: every paper below is academic literature, and most of it is cell-culture (in vitro) or animal research. It describes directions of research, not proven outcomes in people. Nothing here is a treatment claim, and none of it replaces medical care. If you are being treated for anything, talk to your own doctor first.

1. The one paper that studied porcupine bezoar directly

Of the whole compound list, only tannins have a peer-reviewed paper that used porcupine bezoar as the actual sample. It was published by a Malaysian research team:

The researchers took tannin-enriched fractions from porcupine bezoars — both black date and powdery date types — and tested them on cultured human colon cancer cell lines HT-29 and HCT-116. The enriched fractions inhibited growth more strongly than the crude extracts, arrested the cell cycle at S phase, induced apoptosis at a level comparable to commercial tannic acid, and inhibited lipoxygenase (LOX) activity. Chemical analysis identified gallic acid and its derivatives (polygalloyl glucose) as the shared active constituents.

One detail worth highlighting: normal colon cells were unaffected. That said, this remains a study in a dish. The distance between an in vitro result and a human clinical outcome is long, and this paper does not cross it.

3. How to read this research honestly

Listing papers is easy. Reading them properly is harder. These four points have to be said alongside the table, or the table misleads.

Studying a compound is not studying porcupine dates

Apart from the tannin paper, all seven studies used purified single compounds, not porcupine bezoar. Porcupine dates contain these compounds — but the quantity, the ratio, and how much the body actually absorbs are separate questions that these papers do not answer.

Some of these papers describe metabolic pathways, not anticancer effects

  • Glutamic acid: the literature maps the glutamine/glutamate metabolic network. It does not demonstrate that glutamic acid itself is anticancer.
  • Glycine: the Science paper found that cancer cells consume glycine to fuel rapid proliferation — and that blocking glycine uptake impaired fast-growing cells. It describes how cancer cells use glycine, so it should not be presented as glycine being anticancer.
  • Tyrosine: the research targets tyrosine kinases, a class of drug targets. That is a different thing from the tyrosine in food.

Clinical evidence is still limited

Take β-sitosterol. The 2023 Advances in Nutrition review gathers a large body of cell and animal work — and its own authors state plainly that no clinical trials have yet proven this potential, noting poor aqueous solubility and bioavailability as limiting factors. The bromelain liver review is likewise labelled preclinical.

Where we stand

Tong Xin Yuan sells a traditional edible product, not a medicine. We publish these references so customers can judge for themselves instead of relying on hearsay. Porcupine dates do not replace medical treatment. If you are under treatment, tell your doctor what you intend to take and let them decide whether it fits.

4. What we have tested ourselves

Beyond the literature, we have had our own product measured. Tong Xin Yuan nano-extracted porcupine date powder was submitted to an independent laboratory for particle size analysis by Dynamic Light Scattering under ISO 22412:2017, returning a hydrodynamic diameter of 122.73 nm with the main intensity peak at 96.67 nm. Frequently asked questions

Do these papers prove porcupine dates treat cancer?
No. These are laboratory and animal studies describing research directions for individual compounds, not proof of effect in people. No clinical trial has shown that porcupine dates treat any disease. Porcupine dates are a traditional edible product, not a medicine, and they do not replace medical care.
Which paper actually studied porcupine bezoar?
Only the tannin paper: Yew, Lim and Lee in Pharmacognosy Magazine (2019), which used porcupine bezoar samples directly (DOI: 10.4103/pm.pm_620_18). The other seven studied the compounds themselves, not the bezoar.
Why do you flag some compounds as not being anticancer evidence?
Because those papers study metabolic pathways or drug targets. The Science paper, for instance, found that cancer cells consume glycine to support proliferation — that is how cancer uses glycine, not evidence that glycine fights it. The tyrosine literature concerns tyrosine kinase inhibitors, which are drugs, not dietary tyrosine. Saying so is more useful than a vague claim.
Can I take porcupine dates during chemotherapy or radiotherapy?
